Catching up with Federico Bianconi from Palazzo Seneca in Umbria

Happy Friday!

As you may have recently learned on Stanley Tucci’s show “Searching for Italy”, Umbria is known as the country's green heart. Abundant pastures, rich farmland, picturesque valleys, delicious food, laid back people and friendly smiles – these are the hallmarks of our mighty region which I am so proud to be a part of.

Since 1850, my family has run PALAZZO SENECA in the small town of Norcia, our own little slice of heaven in the Umbrian countryside. We all have a deep connection to our land and to the traditions of our people, and our passion to welcome guests into our home is as palpable as the scent of our world-famous truffles.

This time of year is particularly special, as it marks the ‘Flowering of Castelluccio di Norcia’. Each year between late June and mid-July, the lush and endless green pastures of Castelluccio di Norcia dramatically change colors as lentils, poppies, daffodils and violets bloom. Turning a vibrant vision of blues, purples, yellows and reds, Norcia’s undulating hills are more magical than ever.

Below I’m happy to share with you a few recommendations on how your different clients can take advantage of everything Norcia has to offer. Of course, my team and I are always available to provide you with further suggestions or more information. Our Director of Sales, Michela Manca, is particularly happy to assist and we invite you to contact her at michela.manca@palazzoseneca.com.

We hope to welcome you to our home in Norcia soon!

Best regards and have a wonderful weekend,

Federico Bianconi

MY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR…

THE ADVENTURERS

Spend your morning on a guided trek through the Sibillini Mountains and in the afternoon, immerse yourself in the waters of the Corno river with a rafting excursion through the gorges of the Valnerina (the region where Palazzo Seneca is located). Surfing over gentle rapids and navigating river bends will surely give you the adventure you’re looking for.

THE FASHIONISTAS

First, whet your palate with a wine tasting and a picnic within a local vineyard in the heart of the Umbrian countryside. Then head over to the charming town of Bevagna and immerse yourself in its rich history of textile traditions and cashmere production. After an exclusive demonstration in a cashmere workshop, spend time shopping in the manufacturer’s showroom with a private shopper.

THE OENOPHILES

Visit two fantastic wineries, each with their own history and philosophy. The first winery takes inspiration from organic farming practices and provides a lovely family atmosphere while the second is one of the most prestigious and modern wineries in all of Umbria.

THE FOODIES

Learn the secrets of Italian cooking and Norcian cuisine with our Michelin starred chef in either the Vespasia restaurant or in my family’s private home. After tasting the dishes prepared, join our expert Truffle Hunter Nicola and his trusty dogs in the woods of Mount Sibillini National Park for a guided truffle hunt followed by a ricotta cheese making class and an al fresco picnic or aperitivo.

THE NATURE LOVERS

Take in the stunning landscapes and explore the quaint villages of the Valnerina via e-bike. With so much to discover, the pedal assistance provided by the e-bikes will allow you to fully appreciate your surroundings. When you’re ready for a rest, enjoy a tasty and practical take-away picnic prepared by our Michelin starred Vespasia restaurant.

THE EPICURIOUS

Discover the delicacies of Norcia by visiting the area’s very best local producers. Learn about the art of ‘norcineria’ at the black belted pig farm where you will taste a variety of meats and cheeses, followed by a picnic prepared by Vespasia. End this culinary adventure at our historic chocolate factory where you will see how our local sweets are made (and taste them too!)

FOLLOW IN STANLEY TUCCI’S FOOTSTEPS

BRANCALEONE DA NORCIA

When staying with us at Palazzo Seneca, make sure to follow in Stanley’s footsteps by stopping at Brancaleone da Norcia. Here you’ll find Maestro Peppe, the last true traditional ‘Norcino’ (local pork butcher) whose father started the business in 1938. All of the products offered at Brancaleone da Norcia are high quality and delicious, and Stanley agrees. Here’s what he had to say about his experience: “Of all the pork joints in all the towns this one reigns supreme… The salami here really is incredible. The combo of wild herbs from the forest and the fresh mountain air takes it all to another level.”

MY FAVORITE FAMILY ACTIVITIES

From experiencing Norcia as a child myself, to now having my own young children to explore the region with, these are a few of my favorite family activities:

      1. Visiting the animals at the local farms
      2. Walking with the donkeys
      3. Going on a treasure hunt in the woods
      4. Biking through the hills
      5. Having an outdoor picnic

LET US WELCOME YOU

It would be my family’s great pleasure to personally welcome you to Norcia and to PALAZZO SENECA. Come visit us soon!
