Royal Hotel Sanremo
150 Royal Years
The history of the Royal Hotel Sanremo dates back to the mid-1800s, when entrepreneur Lorenzo Bertolini was inspired to build a hotel overlooking the Sanremo promenade.
The hotel was inaugurated in 1872 and immediately it became a favorite meeting place for aristocrats, the European elite, and a myriad of famous personalities from the international jet set.
Led by Mario Bertolini, the founder’s grandson, the hotel attracted a growing number of guests, especially from abroad, which resulted in the name and fame of Sanremo and the Italian “Riviera of Flowers” spreading worldwide.
After World War II, the hotel reopened on Christmas Day in 1946, completely transformed after all the damage it suffered. 1947 marked the opening of “Fiori di Murano”, decorated with glass flowers personally designed by Mario Bertolini. The following year, under the supervision of architect Giò Ponti, the property was completed with a heated outdoor sea-water swimming pool, surrounded by 172,200 square feet of subtropical park and offering stunning views over the Mediterranean Sea.
The hotel is a founding partner of Leading Hotels of the World and a proud member of both Virtuoso Travel and Signature Travel Network. Since 2009, Marco Sarlo has led the property as its director, and thanks to effective sales and marketing strategies, multi annual investment plans, and constant staff training, he has achieved excellent results both in terms of occupancy and service quality.
This year, on the 150th anniversary of its inauguration, the renowned 5-star Royal Hotel Sanremo is still owned by the Bertolini family and has preserved its unique atmosphere and timeless charm. Renovation works continue in close cooperation with management by combining innovation and tradition while respecting the original style of the hotel. The result is top-level comfort and elegance, together with warm hospitality and caring, tailor-made service for all the hotel guests.
Here's to the next 150 years!
Protecting Our Royal Marine Life
To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Royal Hotel Sanremo, we have partnered with the Tethys Institute to ‘adopt’ a beautiful sperm whale which has been given the name “Royal” in our honor.
Founded in 1986, the Tethys Research Institute is a private non-profit organization dedicated to understanding different marine species, preventing their decline, and encouraging a sustainable use of their environment. Composed of thousands of marine biologists and naturalists all over the world, it was the Tethys Institute that established the Pelagos Sanctuary for Mediterranean Marine Mammals, a protected area covering over 34,000 square miles within the northwestern Mediterranean Sea between Italy, France and the island of Sardinia.
There are several ways to experience the excitement of seeing dolphins, fin and sperm whales in their natural environment starting from Sanremo. Your clients can participate in half-day excursions on whale watching motorboats, in sailing and whale watching weekends, or in research cruises with the Tethys Institute lasting 6 days. From May to September, guests can even have the unforgettable experience of assisting marine biologists during their research at sea, contributing to their protection of this incredible habitat.

“Everyone at the front desk, pool, bar, and restaurants have been quite lovely and have been exceeding our expectations. Just this morning, my wife - who is pregnant - was craving pancakes. Even though they aren’t on the room service menu, the kitchen staff managed to make them for her. What a wonderful way to treat a guest! We can’t say enough about how lovely our stay has been.”
